Excelente Awards

Another demonstration of Alan Gordon’s involvement in the international community was as a major sponsor and organizer of the 2003 Excelente Awards. The annual black-tie affair is produced by La Noticia, which is the largest Spanish-language newspaper that is distributed between Miami, Florida and Washington, D.C. reaching an audience of 30,000 Hispanic’s.

The Excelente Awards honors outstanding achievements of business leaders of the Hispanic community. In addition, a special Excelente Award is also bestowed upon a non-Hispanic individual or organization that has demonstrated strong support, involvement and/or enhancement of the Hispanic community.

Mr. Gordon, a 2002 recipient of the special non-Hispanic Excelente Award, arranged to have Eduardo Aguirre, Director of the Citizenship & Immigration Services (CIS) as the keynote speaker for this years’ event. In addition, Mr. Gordon coordinated Mr. Aguirre’s trip to coincide with the opening ceremonies for the new Charlotte CIS and Homeland Security Office.

The first stop of Mr. Aguirre’s visit to Charlotte included his participation in the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at the Charlotte CIS Building. Rosemary Melville, Atlanta CIS District Director and many other regional civic leaders were present for the festivities. Mr. Aguirre administered the oath of citizenship to 80 individuals (most of whom served in the U.S. Armed Forces) and concluded the event on an inspirational note.

Following the successful opening of the CIS and Homeland Security Office, Mr. Aguirre attended and spoke at the Excelente Awards. His presence and speech contributed to the success of the evening. The Excelente Awards sponsors also provide a large financial contribution to the Smart Start Charity of Mecklenburg County (SSCMC). SSCMC is a non-profit charitable organization that was created in 1993 to help children from birth to age 5, and their families to obtain funds and services that will enable these children to enter school healthy and prepared to succeed. SSCMC is funded by the North Carolina State Legislature and through private donations and is governed by a local board of directors who assess local needs and grant funds and services throughout the County.
