Jeffrey Widdison

Mr. Jeff Widdison joined our law firm in September of 2008.  He practices exclusively in immigration law with knowledge and experience in this specialty.  Mr. Widdison has also successfully counseled large and small businesses in I-9 compliance.  He has represented employers in defense against government fines of hundreds of thousands of dollars for I-9 violations.  He has also represented clients in removal proceedings, including filing successful appeals and motions to reopen with the Board of Immigration Appeals and immigration courts.  Mr. Widdison has won numerous immigrant-visa petitions in family and employment-based cases, including numerous waivers for grounds of inadmissibility. 


Mr. Widdison began his legal career with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Attorney Generals Honors Program that selected him to work with the Executive Office for Immigration Review (“EOIR”) in 2006.  Mr. Widdison worked with EOIR as a Judicial Law Clerk with the Denver and Salt Lake City Immigration Courts and the Aurora, Colorado, Detention Facility where he assisted four Immigration Judges in removal proceedings.  He was also in charge of the Intern Program for these courts.  One year later Mr. Widdison was promoted to Attorney Advisor and soon thereafter he accepted a position with the Newark Immigration Court and the Elizabeth, New Jersey Detention Facility where Mr. Widdison assisted nine Immigration Judges with their duties.

Mr. Widdison is originally from Salt Lake City, Utah.  He graduated from the University of Utah in 2002 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Exercise/Sports Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish.  Upon relocating to North Carolina, he attended North Carolina Central University School of Law where he graduated with high honors earning his Juris Doctor degree in 2006.  Mr. Widdison is an active member in good standing of the North Carolina State Bar since 2006.
Mr. Widdison lectures on topics related to immigration law.  Some of his lecture topics in recent years include the following:

  • “Immigrant Information Day,” ACORN, Charlotte, NC, June 20, 2009.
  • “Stays of Removal – Who Can Issue and Effect of a Stay,” Immigration Workshop for the Bench and Bar, Mecklenburg County Bar, Charlotte, NC, March 13, 2009.
  • “Current Reality of Immigration Law,” Construction Financial Management Association, Charlotte, NC, November 11, 2008.

His legal publications include an article published in North Carolina Central University’s Law Journal entitled “Cutting Undocumented Alien Employment Using the Spine of a Knife: How The Fourth Circuit Failed to Adequately Use Title VII to Strengthen IRCA in Egbuna v. Time Life Libraries, Inc.,” 28 N.C. CENT. L.J. 87 (2005).

As a teenager Mr. Widdison lived in Chile for two years where he achieved fluency in Spanish. He has continued to maintain his Spanish language fluency by means of volunteer and employment-related endeavors.
